Early in 2013, Madaket homeowners who did not comply with the June 14, 2012 deadline for mandatory septic inspections received a letter from Health Director Richard Ray advising them of a deadline extension to March 1, 2013. Failure to have septic systems inspected by that date could result in a fine of $300 per day. Each day’s violation will be considered a separate offense. In order to extend the life of septic systems, homeowners should have them pumped regularly – every two or three years, depending on usage. In the event that septic systems in environmentally sensitive areas are in failure, homeowners may apply to the Nantucket Board of Health for a low interest (2%) loan to pay for the repair or replacement of the septic system. The loan is repaid over a 20 year period.
